SUMMARY:Seed Collection for Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Live via videoconference\, 6:30 p.m.\, Wednesday\, September 16\, 2020 \nAs the harvest season approaches\, we will take a closer look at seed production of some native plants\, along with natural dispersal strategies and suggested collection procedures. With an emphasis on ethical practices\, we will prepare for seed collection events scheduled for later in September and beyond. You will be introduced to an amusing array of characters such as clingers\, coneheads\, shakers\, and fluffies. We’ll also discuss seed storage\, as well as options for returning harvested seed to the soil for restoration and native species enrichment. \nWe are not charging a fee to participate\, but will gratefully accept any donations. Offer what you feel it to be worth\, in accordance with what you can afford. Advance registration is required and will be limited to the number of participants we can accommodate online. We are presenting via video conference so that we can see one another’s smiling faces. \nPlease e-mail sue@kmlandtrust.org for detailed information on how to register. \nAs we plan more online educational programs for the weeks to come\, we’d love to hear from you with ideas for topics or guest speakers. \nAs always\, thank you for your support of Kettle Moraine Land Trust. SUMMARY:Project Wingspan: Seed Collection at Price Park
DESCRIPTION:Seed collection is a favorite activity among volunteers in ecological restoration. Two such opportunities will be in the prairies of Price Park Conservancy near Elkhorn in support of Project Wingspan\, a multi-state landscape-scale restoration effort. Kettle Moraine Land Trust is a Core Partner of Project Wingspan. Volunteers for the Project Wingspan collection outings are required to complete a simple online training module available here. When you sign in\, please self-identify as being with KMLT. Our two dates at Price Park are Wednesday\, September 23\, 2020 and Thursday\, October 1\, 2020; both collection outings are from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at N6421 Hodunk Road\, Elkhorn\, WI 53121. \nFor these seed-collection outings\, please bring your own work gloves and any hand tools you would wish to use (e.g.\, pruning shears). Also please bring your own collection bag(s). Reusable grocery bags or tote bags work well for this purpose and you’ll be able to keep your bag for subsequent reuse. We recommend that you wear long pants\, long sleeves\, and a sun hat. Please bring your own water and any snacks you may wish to have while in the field. All participants must be masked; masks may be removed while working alone\, well apart from other volunteers. Hand sanitizer will be available on site.

SUMMARY:Harvest at Hackmatack
DESCRIPTION:Join Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy for a seed-collection outing to Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge in celebration of 2020 Land Trust Days! Saturday\, September 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. we’ll be harvesting ripe seed of native prairie plants at the Turner Tract\, just northwest of Genoa City\, Wisconsin on County Trunk H. \nHackmatack National Wildlife Refuge was established in 2012\, spanning the state line in McHenry County\, Illinois and Walworth County\, Wisconsin. The Turner Tract was the first portion of the refuge to be open to the public. Former agricultural lands occupying portions of the site were seeded with native prairie plants by Ducks Unlimited prior to the transfer of the property to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for inclusion in the Refuge. \nVolunteers from throughout the Hackmatack region will be on hand to harvest native prairie seeds under the guidance of professional staff from Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy. \nVolunteers are encouraged to wear long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe shoes or boots\, and a sun hat.  Please bring your own seed collection bag (a reusable grocery bag is fine) and your own  water. Seeds collected there during the Land Trust Days event will be turned over to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for native species enrichment within the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge.

And music—yes\, some authentic\, down-home Midwestern folk music\, rooted in Wisconsin’s own glacial soils\, celebrating the natural world that sustains us all.  We are pleased to offer a heartfelt live set of original roots music by the masterful Kendra Swanson! \nPlease join us for the  Virtual Tea Party\, Sunday\, September 27 at 4:00 p.m. For a donation as little as $10 (through Eventbrite) you’ll receive a personalized link to the live tea party\, held via video conference and featuring Kendra’s enchanting songs. SUMMARY:Full Moon Hike
DESCRIPTION:The Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Walworth County Parks Department are pleased to announce our upcoming program: Full Moon Hike. \nAs the sun sets and the moon rises\, open your senses to the sights and sounds of nature under cover of darkness.  The hike will be guided by a seasoned naturalist.  Use of flashlights is discouraged while hiking on the trail. \nThe hike will be led by Naturalist Greg Rajsky of the Kettle Moraine Land Trust.  Kettle Moraine Land Trust’s educational programming is supported in part through a grant from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation. \nDue to Covid-19 restrictions\, the hike will be limited to 10 participants so sign up now by emailing info@kmlandtrust.org.
