SUMMARY:Stewardship - Annual Hackmatack Seed Collection Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy for a seed-collection outing to Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge in celebration of 2025 Land Trust Days! Friday\, October 3\, from 10:00 a.m.-noon\, we’ll be harvesting ripe seed of native prairie plants at the Turner Tract\, just northwest of Genoa City\, Wisconsin on County Trunk H.Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge was established in 2012\, spanning the state line in McHenry County\, Illinois and Walworth County\, Wisconsin. The Turner Tract was the first portion of the refuge to be open to the public. Former agricultural lands occupying portions of the site were seeded with native prairie plants by Ducks Unlimited prior to the transfer of the property to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for inclusion in the Refuge.Volunteers from throughout the Hackmatack region will be on hand to harvest native prairie seeds under the guidance of staff from Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe shoes or boots\, and a sun hat. Bring a refillable water bottle. Seeds collected there during the Land Trust Days event will be turned over to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for native species enrichment within the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge. \nRegistration required. We’ll have extra binoculars on hand\, and feel free to bring your own. We’ll also use the Merlin Birding App to capture (electronically) what we observe!  We’ll hike in search of local birds\, and go over observation tips for identifying what we’re hearing and seeing. SUMMARY:Seno Woodland Center Prairie Seed Collection
DESCRIPTION:Help Seno KRLT and KMLT collect seed to further diversify their preserves! Join us for an afternoon of harvesting native prairie seeds under the guidance of Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Seno K/RLT Conservancy staff and volunteers. Seeds collected during the event will used by both land trusts for native species enrichment both at Seno Woodland Center and KMLT preserves. Volunteers are encouraged to wear appropriate clothes – long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe boots\, and sunhats. Refreshments will be provided participants in the barn at the start of the event for a brief talk on seed collection before we head into the prairie. \nWe ask that those who wish to attend register in advance so we know how many to expect. Register here \nWe will cancel and reschedule the event in the case of inclement weather.

DESCRIPTION:Join Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy for a seed-collection outing to Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge in celebration of 2024 Land Trust Days! Saturday\, September 28 from 10:00 a.m.-noon\, we’ll be harvesting ripe seed of native prairie plants at the Turner Tract\, just northwest of Genoa City\, Wisconsin on County Trunk H.Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge was established in 2012\, spanning the state line in McHenry County\, Illinois and Walworth County\, Wisconsin. The Turner Tract was the first portion of the refuge to be open to the public. Former agricultural lands occupying portions of the site were seeded with native prairie plants by Ducks Unlimited prior to the transfer of the property to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for inclusion in the Refuge.Volunteers from throughout the Hackmatack region will be on hand to harvest native prairie seeds under the guidance of professional staff from Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe shoes or boots\, and a sun hat. Bring a refillable water bottle. Seeds collected there during the Land Trust Days event will be turned over to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for native species enrichment within the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge. \nRegistration required.
