DESCRIPTION:Help Seno KRLT and KMLT collect seed to further diversify their preserves! Join us for an afternoon of harvesting native prairie seeds under the guidance of Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Seno K/RLT Conservancy staff and volunteers. Seeds collected during the event will used by both land trusts for native species enrichment both at Seno Woodland Center and KMLT preserves. Volunteers are encouraged to wear appropriate clothes – long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe boots\, and sunhats. Refreshments will be provided participants in the barn at the start of the event for a brief talk on seed collection before we head into the prairie. \nWe ask that those who wish to attend register in advance so we know how many to expect. DESCRIPTION:Join Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy for a seed-collection outing to Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge in celebration of 2024 Land Trust Days! Saturday\, September 28 from 10:00 a.m.-noon\, we’ll be harvesting ripe seed of native prairie plants at the Turner Tract\, just northwest of Genoa City\, Wisconsin on County Trunk H.Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge was established in 2012\, spanning the state line in McHenry County\, Illinois and Walworth County\, Wisconsin. The Turner Tract was the first portion of the refuge to be open to the public. Former agricultural lands occupying portions of the site were seeded with native prairie plants by Ducks Unlimited prior to the transfer of the property to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for inclusion in the Refuge.Volunteers from throughout the Hackmatack region will be on hand to harvest native prairie seeds under the guidance of professional staff from Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe shoes or boots\, and a sun hat. Wear sturdy walking shoes\, dress for the weather\, and bring binoculars and a birding guide if you have them. We’ll have a few spare binoculars and guides to share\, and will also discuss the use of E-Bird birding App to help keep track of what we observe. We’ll discuss basic use of binoculars\, introduction to birding and hike to explore the prairie and woodland bird habitats at Price Park. \nFree. Registration required.
