DESCRIPTION:Join Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy for a seed-collection outing to Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge in celebration of 2022 Land Trust Days! Saturday\, September 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. we’ll be harvesting ripe seed of native prairie plants at the Turner Tract\, just northwest of Genoa City\, Wisconsin on County Trunk H.Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge was established in 2012\, spanning the state line in McHenry County\, Illinois and Walworth County\, Wisconsin. The Turner Tract was the first portion of the refuge to be open to the public. Former agricultural lands occupying portions of the site were seeded with native prairie plants by Ducks Unlimited prior to the transfer of the property to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for inclusion in the Refuge.Volunteers from throughout the Hackmatack region will be on hand to harvest native prairie seeds under the guidance of professional staff from Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe shoes or boots\, and a sun hat. Bring a refillable water bottle. Seeds collected there during the Land Trust Days event will be turned over to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for native species enrichment within the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge.

Ms. Garness is a professional botanic and scientific illustrator who works with the Field Museum and The Nature Conservancy to produce educational materials for the growing community of natural areas restoration volunteers. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 28\, 1:00-3:30 p.m. \nWhere: W6641 North Lake Shore Drive\, Elkhorn\, WI 53121 \nEvery 4th Saturday we host a monthly volunteer workday to help manage and restore our preserves and partner sites. For May\, we’ll meet at the Adelman-Schwartz Preserve owned by The Prairie Enthusiasts and held as a conservation easement by KMLT. We’ll work to cut invasive brush resprouts\, so please wear heavy long sleeves and sturdy work gloves/boots. We’ll have loppers and hand saws\, but feel free to bring your own if you like. \n

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 16\, 9:00 p.m. at Price Park\, N6418 Hodunk Rd\, Elkhorn\, WI 53121 \nJoin us for the “Flower Moon” at Walworth County’s Price Park. Our evening begins at 9:00. Park near the dog park picnic pavilion. Moonrise is at 9:17\, and we’ll enjoy the view over the prairie. Please feel free to bring your own beverage to enjoy as we visit and appreciate the full moon. While there is no charge for this event\, we do ask that you register in advance rachel@kmlandtrust.org so we can keep folks posted in case of inclement weather. Let’s hope for clear skies!

Early May is a great time to enjoy woodland wildflowers\, and we’ll tour our Beulah Bluff Preserve\, N9026 Bakavi Way\, East Troy\, WI 53120\, to see what’s in bloom\, and chat a bit about plant identification and woodland ecology. If you’d like to bring your camera and a field guide\, please do; we’ll have some field guides to share as well.

DESCRIPTION:In our southeast Wisconsin region\, we’re fortunate to live in a landscape mosaic of woodlands\, wetlands\, prairies\, lakes and streams. While preserving these natural areas is key to protecting the many plants and animals that live here\, just saving areas from development isn’t enough. As good stewards of the land\, we also must manage invasive species to give the competitive edge to native plants and animals\, and sometimes put back the indigenous species that are missing. This science is known as restoration ecology. The application of the science in the field is known as natural areas management. Join us for a conversation about what these restoration practices involve\, what such practices can accomplish\, and how you can help our efforts to keep our local natural areas healthy and productive.  \n  \nPlease register with rachel@kmlandtrust.org.
