SUMMARY:Annual Seed Collection at Hackmatack
DESCRIPTION:Join Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy for a seed-collection outing to Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge in celebration of 2021 Land Trust Days! Saturday\, September 25th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. we’ll be harvesting ripe seed of native prairie plants at the Turner Tract\, just northwest of Genoa City\, Wisconsin on County Trunk H. \nHackmatack National Wildlife Refuge was established in 2012\, spanning the state line in McHenry County\, Illinois and Walworth County\, Wisconsin. The Turner Tract was the first portion of the refuge to be open to the public. Former agricultural lands occupying portions of the site were seeded with native prairie plants by Ducks Unlimited prior to the transfer of the property to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for inclusion in the Refuge. \nVolunteers from throughout the Hackmatack region will be on hand to harvest native prairie seeds under the guidance of professional staff from Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe shoes or boots\, and a sun hat. Bring a refillable water bottle. Seeds collected there during the Land Trust Days event will be turned over to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for native species enrichment within the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge. \nPlease fill out this form to register\, https://forms.gle/85F9t9KKcc9K7AcJ9 \n

SUMMARY:Astronomy at Price Park Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:Like most people\, KMLT members probably think of the parks and preserved lands our organization maintains as being used and enjoyed only during daylight hours – but all of our properties offer the wonderful potential for evening use as well\, especially for viewing nighttime skies! \nYou are invited to become part of a small group of amateur astronomical observers on Wednesday\, September 8\, 2021\, at Price Park\, N6418 Hodunk Road\, Elkhorn\, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The group will be led by KMLT board member and veteran astronomer Dan Koehler\, formerly of Yerkes Observatory\, who will give a beginner’s presentation under late summer evening skies designed to introduce basic observing techniques using the unaided eye\, binoculars\, and small telescopes. During the observing session we will be looking at some basic celestial objects like stars\, planets\, and some “deep space” objects\, learning some of the constellation and bright star names\, and understanding how the nighttime sky works and changes from season to season. \nIn case of rain or overcast skies\, we will attempt to host the event on the alternate nights of Tuesday\, September 14\, or Wednesday\, September 15\, also from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at Price Park. The group is limited to 20 participants aged 10 and up so early registration is strongly encouraged. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are required (your shoes must be closed-toed\, no sandals please!). A donation of $20 per person to the KMLT is suggested. \nRequests for registration and all questions should be directed to Dan via email at dkoehler@wi.rr.com. When registering\, please include the name(s) of the participants and a good contact phone number.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friend of KMLT\, \nIn these troubled times we could all benefit from a little comfort and care. \nI say! How about a nice cuppa tea? Tea and toast… or a scone or crumpet. Yes\, that does sound comforting. And music—yes\, some authentic\, down-home Midwestern folk music\, rooted in Wisconsin’s own glacial soils\, celebrating the natural world that sustains us all.  We are pleased to offer a heartfelt live set of original roots music by the masterful Kendra Swanson! \nPlease join us for the  Virtual Tea Party\, Sunday\, September 27 at 4:00 p.m. For a donation as little as $10 (through Eventbrite) you’ll receive a personalized link to the live tea party\, held via video conference and featuring Kendra’s enchanting songs. And you can enjoy it all from the comfort of your own home. \nOf course\, higher-level donations would be very much appreciated at this time. We are raising money to cover our expenses during the pandemic when gathering in person is ill-advised and nonprofit revenues are down all around. \nOur video-conference guest capacity is limited\, so you are encouraged to register before September 21. \nKendra Swanson is a songwriter and performer of lively\, folksome music: frailing banjo\, rigorous guitar\, soulful strings\, and hearty vocals to boot. Her music distinctly embodies a truly Americana sound from (and about) the heartland\, with intimate reflections on its flora\, fauna\, and people. She has independently produced and released three all-original albums\, “Kendra & Kin\, Live in Rockford” (2013)\, “Go Down to the Low Down” (2015)\, and “Without\, Within” (2017). A troubadour and professional naturalist\, she blends stories and ecology into one-of-a-kind performances of laughter and truth. \nFollow this link to purchase tickets on Eventbrite! See you at the Tea Party!

SUMMARY:Harvest at Hackmatack
DESCRIPTION:Join Kettle Moraine Land Trust and Geneva Lake Conservancy for a seed-collection outing to Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge in celebration of 2020 Land Trust Days! Saturday\, September 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. we’ll be harvesting ripe seed of native prairie plants at the Turner Tract\, just northwest of Genoa City\, Wisconsin on County Trunk H. \nVolunteers are encouraged to wear long pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toe shoes or boots\, and a sun hat.  Please bring your own seed collection bag (a reusable grocery bag is fine) and your own  water. Seeds collected there during the Land Trust Days event will be turned over to the US Fish & Wildlife Service for native species enrichment within the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge.

SUMMARY:Toward a Savanna Flora
DESCRIPTION:Live via videoconference\, 6:30 p.m.\, Wednesday\, August 19\, 2020 \nWhen Europeans first arrived in southeastern Wisconsin\, they found a landscape unlike any they had seen previously. Neither prairie nor forest\, today we call it the Midwest Oak Savanna\, an ecosystem that remains something of a mystery unfolding. Our savannas were\, essentially\, lost to disturbance before the science of ecology had even been invented. What plants truly belong to the oak savannas? In the absence of widely agreed-upon indicator species\, we’ll take a few tentative steps toward identifying a flora of the so-called fine-textured-soil savannas of northeastern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin. \nWe are not charging a fee to participate\, but will gratefully accept any donations. Offer what you feel it to be worth\, in accordance with what you can afford. Advance registration is required and will be limited to the number of participants we can accommodate online. We are presenting via video conference so that we can see one another’s smiling faces (and pandemic haircuts!). \nPlease e-mail sue@kmlandtrust.org for detailed information on how to register. \nAs we plan more online educational programs for the weeks to come\, we’d love to hear from you with ideas for topics or guest speakers. \nAs always\, thank you for your support of Kettle Moraine Land Trust. SUMMARY:Tree Identification
DESCRIPTION:Update: Date Moved to Wednesday\, July 22! \nTree Identification at Price Park Conservancy \nWednesday\, July 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. \nDid you know that Price Park is home to four species of oaks\, four species of maples\, and two species of hickories? Do you know which of our native tree species are more likely to grow in a savanna\, in a forest\, or in a floodplain? How many of the trees and shrubs that you encounter in our natural areas do you suppose might actually be invasive? Examine these questions while you explore the wooded hillsides of Price Park with KMLT’s Greg Rajsky. Register by e-mail:  sue@kmlandtrust.org \nThere is no fee\, but due to COVID-19 restrictions we are limiting attendance to the first ten people to register. SUMMARY:Furthering Diversity: Second Virtual Tour
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, June 30\, 2020 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. \nRegistration Required; capacity is limited. \nFor too long\, native plants have been largely ignored by gardeners and by commercial growers\, alike. Adapted to our soils\, our climate\, and the stresses associated with our local environments\, the plants that evolved here can add beauty\, interest\, and function to the local built landscape. \nThis presentation will highlight the value of native plants\, whether in nature\, in the home garden\, or in landscaped environments surrounding schools\, churches\, or businesses. In addition\, we will explore some of the shortcomings of so-called nativars\, hybrids based in part on native stock. \nPresented by KMLT’s Executive Director\, Greg Rajsky\, who has been gardening with native plants for more than 25 years. \nPlease e-mail sue@kmlandtrust.org for detailed information on how to register.

We’ll see specimens from our preserves and from other sites we manage\, along with a few places elsewhere in the region. In addition to location\, the photographs bear dates for those who like to know just when they might be able to find certain species in bloom. Greg will share information about habitat or other interesting bits of lore concerning the species we highlight. \nWe are not charging a fee to participate\, but will gratefully accept any donations.
