Ms. Garness is a professional botanic and scientific illustrator who works with the Field Museum and The Nature Conservancy to produce educational materials for the growing community of natural areas restoration volunteers. DESCRIPTION:In our southeast Wisconsin region\, we’re fortunate to live in a landscape mosaic of woodlands\, wetlands\, prairies\, lakes and streams. While preserving these natural areas is key to protecting the many plants and animals that live here\, just saving areas from development isn’t enough. As good stewards of the land\, we also must manage invasive species to give the competitive edge to native plants and animals\, and sometimes put back the indigenous species that are missing. This science is known as restoration ecology. The application of the science in the field is known as natural areas management. We’ll convene at 5:00 p.m. at our Petersen Island Woods Preserve (provide address and where to park)\, just before sunset. On this day\, the sunset and moon rise will only be minutes apart. You are welcome to bring your own snacks and beverages and hang out for some outdoor and socially distant conversation. Who made that paw print? What was the animal doing? What other items might animals leave behind that tell us about what they were doing?
